The Butchulla Aboriginal People have had a long association with the island that would eventually be called “Fraser Island”. On the time scale European presence has been very recent. On a scale of impact the Butchulla impact has been low. The European impacts, though limited in years has ranged from considerable to high. Through map and photograph take your students to Fraser Island and follow the changes. Find out the origin of the name. Recognise why the extractive timber and sand mining activities caused concern and opposition.
Understand why the island was given World Heritage status. Work out why the current tourism has both positive and negative impacts. Consider the need for management on a island that does have future issues with global warming and the global debate over emission levels. This island provides the opportunity for students to investigate a wide range of issues accumulated from the past; active in the present and of future concern. The attachments provide opportunities for in class discussion and individual research.
