French phonics and alphabet

An introductory lesson to French phonics and alphabet. All tasks have an extension task (EXTEND IT) to cater for the more able students.

STARTER: recap of basic questions in French (this should have normally been covered in the first French beginner’s lesson).

MINI-PLENARY: this is an assessment for learning opportunity to check for understanding of the previous topic.

TASK 1: reading activity to revise how to introduce oneself, age, town.

LANGUAGE INPUT 1: the grid shows different French sounds with a French word for each sound as an example. The last column shows how that sound is pronounced using English sounds.

TASK 2: pronunciation exercise using words that contain the sounds covered in the language input.

LANGUAGE INPUT 2: students listen and repeat the letters in the French alphabet.

TASK 3: students practise how to spell five words in French using the letters covered in the language input.

PLENARY: song about the French alphabet to check for pronunciation and understanding.
