English Functional Skills Entry Level 1 Writing Workbook
This resource has been designed for students working towards Entry Level 1 Functional Skills English certification (Edexcel-Pearson, NCFE, City and Guilds, NOCN and Open Awards). It contains age-appropriate, materials and resources to deliver the reading, writing, spelling and speaking and listening components of English Functional Skills. There are eleven workbooks in total.
Entry Level 1 Reading Workbook
The tasks have been designed to achieve the following learning outcomes:
to read correctly words designated for Entry Level 1
to read simple sentences containing one clause
to understand a short piece of text on a simple subject
There are ten texts and ten tasks.
Entry Level 1 Sentence Writing Workbook
The workbook contains 3 explanation pages, 11 worksheets, two progress checks, a certificate of achievement and answers.
Tasks and activities include:
Recognising and writing lower case letters
Recognising and writing capital letters
Starting sentences with a capital letter
Marking the end of sentences with a full stop
Correcting sentences
Punctuating two simple sentences
Writing a simple sentence
Capital Letters Workbook
This is an 18 page workbook with 3 explanation pages, 13 worksheets, two progress checks, a certificate of achievement and answers on the Entry Level 1 writing component - using capital letters for proper nouns.
Tasks and activities include:
Identifying and using capital letters for proper nouns
Correcting the use of capital letter in sentences
Writing simple sentences using capital letters appropriately
Speaking and Listening Workbook
The tasks and activities have been designed to achieve the following learning outcomes:
to participate in and understand the main points of simple discussions/exchanges about familiar topics with another person in a familiar situation.
to take part in and contribute to a discussion in a small group.
to understand the main points of short explanations.
to understand and follow instructions.
to respond appropriately to comments and requests.
to ask simple questions to obtain specific information.
to make simple requests.
There are eighteen speaking and listening tasks.
Entry Level 1 Spelling Practice Workbook
This resource contains a 25 page spelling practice workbook. It contains all the words that students are expected to both read and spell correctly. The spellings have been compiled from the Entry 1 word lists specified by DfE and provided in Appendix 2 of the Functional Skills Entry Level English (Entry 1) Qualification and Assessment Specification.
Tasks include practising spelling the words using the look, say, cover, write method: inserting the correct word into a sentence and composing simple sentences using words in the list. The resource also contains a checklist for recording students’ ability to read and spell all of the words.
Entry Level 1 Spelling Workbook
The workbook focuses on the words specified by the DfE in the Entry 1 word lists in Appendix 2 of the Functional Skills Entry Level 1 English specification. The workbook includes tips and advice on learning to spell words and provides many opportunities for pupils to practise and improve their spelling. The workbook contains 22 information pages, 36 worksheets and a progress test. It is available in both PDF format and an editable PowerPoint version. The workbook can be used for classwork, homework or as an independent learning pack.

This resource contains a 25 page spelling test booklet. The resource contains a teacher book, student spelling test booklet and spelling checklists that include all the words that students are expected to both read and spell correctly.
