Electromagnets Investigations
GCSE Combined Science and Physics (9 – 1) Magnetism and Electromagnetism: PowerPoint based lesson investigating electromagnets for the Magnetism and Electromagnetism section of the GCSE specifications with a PowerPoint presentation and student practical worksheets.
The lesson includes:
Starter activity: Students match key words with definitions for basic magnetism terms.
A discussion of permanent and induced magnets and the magnetic fields produced by current-carrying straight wire and solenoid,
The PowerPoint presentation leads the students through practical activities to make and test the factors that affect the strength of an electromagnet.
Plenary activity: Questions to summarise the main objectives for the lesson.
Student Worksheets
The lesson includes 3 student practical worksheets to test the number of coils and electric current (one version using cells and one using power supplies.
A student worksheet to analyse a set of results for the electric current through an electromagnet. This can be used for homework or extension and it addressing some of the practical skills required for GCSE.
