This is a two page hand out you can use as a cover lesson or as a starting point for a series of art and design lessons looking at Matisse’s cut out period, or as part of an investigation into Fauvism.

The download includes an A4 PDF for easy printing, and the Adobe Illustrator build file so you can make edits if you need to.

The lesson is broken down into:

Context; giving a brief overview of Matisse, with comprehension questions. I like to use this page as a starter.

Task; includes example themes the students can use as the basis for their own cuts outs.

Character, underlines the soft skills the students will be using alongside their designing skills .

Equipment; covers what they’ll need from you and what to grab out of their pencil cases.

Assessment; Key areas the students can use to self and peer assess their work are included and could be your plenary, or a starter prior to moving on to further related work.
