Introductory organic chemistry lesson for Key stage 4 (AQA synergy specification). Includes a recap of how crude oil is formed, defining hydrocarbon and looking at structures for the first four alkanes (including general formula). Includes a worksheet to record chemical formula, number of carbon and hydrogen atoms and displayed formulae for methane, ethane, propane and butane. I use molymod kits with this lesson so pupils can visualise structures of the alkane molecules.
