Description:

This resource is a whole lesson/lesson plan for Year 8 Maths teachers who teach Index Numbers (Index Laws), specifically, power of a power. It will help you teach a smooth lesson even if you do not have a strong mathematical background. Just run the PowerPoint.

**Learning Objectives: **

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
• Develop the ‘power of a power’ index law using positive integer indices

Links to curricula:

• Use index notation with numbers to establish the index laws with positive integral indices and the zero index (ACMNA182)

Standards or Specifications:

The lesson follows the explicit teaching method. I DO, YOU DO, WE DO.
There is a Lesson Focus & Success Criteria slide with learning objectives.
At the end of the PowerPoint file, there is a homework slide. The suggested pages and the question numbers in it are for the book Maths Quest 8, published by Jacaranda.

How to use it

The lesson format is in a PowerPoint file. There are symbols to prompt certain actions in the lesson. They have the following meanings:
• WARM-UPS: There are questions from the last lesson. It is a good idea to start with these examples. No more than 10 minutes.
• W: Write from the board
• I DO – Teacher does the question (step by step solution).
• WE DO – Teacher prompts students to participate, asks questions and helps them with solutions where necessary.
• YOU DO – Students work independently.
