Lesson 2 in ‘Intoduction to Algebra’
Using problem solving skills the students should have built throughout the year, this 1 hour lesson explains to students that algebra and problem solving can be very similar and will help the children to develop their algebra skills in a manor that the students recognise.

The Powerpoint has 3 sections;
What is algebra
This section discusses what algebra is and what the students might think it is.
Algebra and Problem Solving
This section asks the children to complete a problem solving question.
Basic Algebra
This section takes the previous problem solving question and translates it into algebra, with an additional question for the children to try themselves.
The focus of this lesson is to explain how multiplication and division work in regards to algebra and has been tested on a Year 5 class with great success.
