Kensuke’s Kingdom - 6 week reading planning focussing on the teaching of reading and covering a range of domains each week:
Retrieve and record
Vocabulary
Inference
Explanation
Summaries and Sequences
Prediction

Each week comprises of up to 4 sessions, lasting approx. 30 minutes:
Session 1: Modelling
Session 2: Practice
Session 3: Independence
Session 4: Apply

Our reading planning has been designed to go alongside the comprehension questions and answers of our novels, poems and picture books.

It is a 4 step approach to supporting children in developing an understanding of the text they are reading through specific modelling, scaffolding and explanation.

The 4 step approach:

Modelling : supporting children in understanding the concept and demonstrating how to develop key areas through clear explanations.
Practice: allowing children time to demonstrate their understanding from the previous session through guided support and scaffolding.
Independence: moving children towards developing their understanding through independent practice.
Apply: children answering questions independently in a comprehension exercise covering all aspects of understanding.

The planning consists of 30 minute lessons that includes guided practice and activities to explore the different areas of reading that supports children to develop a mental model of what they have read. The planning covers all areas of the reading content domains and explores them over the weeks alongside the text and enjoyment of reading.

Really like this as the lessons look doable within my timetable and it actually fits in well with the new reading framework. Looking forward to delivering these in the new academic year.
