This is an introductory lesson to studying 'Animal Farm' designed for a top set/high ability Y7 class.
The lesson does not openly refer to 'Animal Farm', instead it introduces the idea of society and hierarchy and invites students to consider the hierarchy in their own society (and in their own school!).
The lesson then has a speaking and listening group task of creating a new 'society' and 'hierarchy', which they then present and vote for the one that sounds the most fair and plausible.
Mine really enjoyed this lesson, it gave them a very sound grasp of what society meant and why the structure we use might be deemed unfair. This has set them up very well for their study of the novel.
