I find that students can find logs daunting when first introduced. For this reason I like to introduce the concept via the game 'Through the Green Glass Door' - certain things are allowed through the green glass door; certain things are not.
This allows the students to create the maths for themselves, in some sense, which should allow them to take ownership and have greater retention over the rules.
