LORD HOWE ISLAND PART 1 - LOCATION, GEOGRAPHY/BASIC GEOLOGY, BIODIVERSITY

This is the introductory unit of a 2 part series on Lord Howe Island. Lord Howe Island is a small and remote island in the Pacific Ocean off the east coast of Australia. It is a remote island which explains its unique biodiversity. It is also an island that has many attractions for a range of tourists. In some travel brochures it is described as “a Pacific Island Paradise”. Take your students (via visual resources) to Lord Howe Island. Recognise the basic evolution of the landscape and understand some of the reasons for its unique biodiversity. This unit can standalone as a place of interest. It can form the background for unit 2 which uncovers some of the problems that emerged due to human contact. If you want to extend investigations on islands the materials on Galapagos Islands (Charles Darwin) adds another avenue of island study. The worksheets (colour and black and white) are provided to promote classroom discussion and individual response. Lord Howe Island has a spectacular range of landscapes. However - as part 2 will explain -this “paradise” is not without its problems and challenges.
