This is a lesson on literary proposals for the unseen prose part of AQA love through the ages. It uses a historicist approach, getting the students to think about proposals over time, and getting them to look at different extracts in preparation for their exam. It builds up skills and independence. I used a carousel in groups to get them to look at extracts from:
Tess of the D'Urbervilles
Jane Eyre
Gone with the Wind
Portrait of a Lady

It leads up to an unseen question on how proposals can be difficult for both men and women in Dickens' 'Our Mutual Friend.'
