Major Murray Flood Summer 2022-23 Part 1

In 1956 the record flood level of the RIVER MURRAY in South Australia was reached. That level was marked on the bridge at Murray Bridge and marked on several tree trunks along the course of the river. There have been several other floods since 1956. These range from “Minor” to “Medium” to “Major”. The flood levels of the summer of 2022-2023 (December-February) classified that flood as “Major”.
This first unit has a focus on the causes of the recent flood. It considers the basic nature of the formation of the River Murray and related river-formed features. It then considers the river catchment and the of volume water entering the headwater areas.
This opening unit can be approached by role playing or by observation and discussion of projected pages. The following units can be linked with this opening unit. The flood levels of December 2022-February 2023 did not reach the 1956 level but they have caused many who were impacted to reconsider their future association with the river because of its tendency to reach flood levels.
