i am not sure the interpretation of this poem fits with what we know of Armitage. Assuming this is autobiographical, he still wears a silver earring. i think it more likely that this admonition is to one of the Young Offenders with whom he worked until 1994 as Probation Officer. He has no son ( and would not have had at one old enough, at the age of 29, to be wearing an earring) and yet this is clearly him recalling something more that his Father said.
