New Zealand Essential Spelling Words – Mystery Codes

A high-interest activity to assist your students with learning their essential spelling words.

Students use a ‘Secret Code Alphabet Sheet’ to decode the 5 mystery words on their worksheet. Then they complete the other activities using these 5 words.

Activities:
♦ Decode the mystery words using the secret code alphabet sheet.
♦ Write the words in the letter boxes.
♦ Write the words in alphabetical order.
♦ Select one (or more) words and write it in a fancy way (word art).

The ‘Alphabet Code Sheets’ are designed to be laminated and used multiple times. There are 2 on each A4 size page. Print and cut.

Sheets are labelled with the list number in the top left corner (eg 4e)

The code breaking activity works on important skills such as comparing/contrasting, predicting and skimming/scanning.
