This Pachamama (2018) Movie Guide challenges students to:
- Contrast the offerings of Tepulpai and Naïra during the Pachamama ceremony and analyze what their choices say about their characters.
- Discuss whether Tepulpai is selfish and provide examples from the movie to support the argument.
- Interpret the meaning behind the chasqui’s description of a “floating house,” “metal skin,” and “spitting fire” in relation to the Spanish invaders.
- Analyze how Tepulpai’s realization about taking things without permission begins to change his character and behavior.
- Explain why the shaman rewards Tepulpai with his drum and the title of “little shaman” and what it signifies about Tepulpai’s growth.
- Explore how Tepulpai and Naïra change each other throughout the movie and argue who experiences the greatest transformation.
- Evaluate the historical accuracy of Pachamama by selecting 4 topics, such as Inca religion, quipus, the Spanish conquest, and the cultural significance of gold, and comparing how these are depicted in the movie with researched facts about the Inca Empire.
Optionally: Ask students to listen for and define 6 Inca-related words used throughout the movie.
