Help your KS2 pupils recall the phases of the moon in a hands-on way with this set of differentiated foldouts. This activity can be used to support learning about space, the solar system, the Earth’s Moon/lunar phases or for World Space Week. Plus it’s a little different to a standard worksheet!

The phases of the Moon in this resource are as seen in the Northern Hemisphere.

The templates
There are 5 similar templates to choose from:

  • Template 1: Colour the Moon and the Moon’s phases, cut, glue, and fold.
  • Template 2: Colour the Moon and the Moon’s phases, match the word labels to the pictures, glue, cut, and fold.
Template 3: Colour the Moon and the Moon’s phases, sequence the phases on the template, glue, cut, and fold.
Template 4: Colour the Moon and phases of the moon, identify the Moon’s phases, write the name of each one on the lines, cut, glue, and fold.
Template 5: Print in colour. Colour the Moon, identify the Moon’s phases, write the name of each one on the lines, cut, glue, and fold.

Templates 1, 2, 3, and 4 are all included with 2 options - one with the letter ‘b’ on the phases of the Moon to show pupils which part to colour black, and one without.

What else is included?

  • Pictures showing where to fold the templates.
  • Colour poster page showing the full lunar cycle.
  • Flashcards to introduce what each phase of the moon looks like (colour, 2-to-a-page). You could also use them for a matching activity by cutting out each card, and then cutting between the word and the picture.

Space foldable sequencing activities phases of the moon and planets in the soalr system KS2

These fun foldouts are a memorable way of teaching the planets in our solar system and the phases of the moon. Use as a science centre, for an interactive notebook or to support learning/lessons around space, including World Space Week. **Sequencing the planets** There are 3 similar template options to choose from: * Students colour the template with the planets in order (from nearest to the sun to furthest away). They also colour the 2 halves of the space scene. They then cut out the template and space scene, glue the space scene to the top and bottom of the template, then fold. * The second option is the same, but students will cut out and order the planets before gluing and folding. * For the third option, students match simple facts to each of the planets before cutting and folding. **Phases of the moon** This printable activity has 4 options for you to choose from so that you can best match the needs of your students: * Template 1: Colour the phases of the moon, cut, glue and fold. * Template 2 (print in colour): Identify the phases of the moon, write them on the template, glue, cut and fold. * Template 3: Colour the phases of the moon, sequence them on the template, glue, cut and fold. There are 2 label options for this template - one has the letter ‘b’ on the phases of the moon to show students which part to colour black. * Template 4: Colour the phases of the moon, cut and sequence them, write the names of each stage, glue, cut and fold. The phases of the moon include the letter ‘b’ to show which part to colour black.
