Postcard Competition Resource - 'Postcards from the Future'

Climate focused competition resource pack from Create The Future.
The competition is open to young people aged 5-12, and can be facilitated in schools, youth groups, at home, or delivered remotely.

Entrants should imagine what a positive future might look like for the Earth if we take actions to care for it now, draw their vision for the future on the front of the postcard, and write a message from the future on the back. Photographs of postcards can be submitted via Create The Future’s website.

The resource pack includes:

• Poster page with a summary of the competition details;
• Postcard templates (front & back);
• Differentiated template options for higher, middle, and lower abilities;
• Dyslexia friendly formatting;
• Sentence starters, picture prompts, writing prompts, and a gap fill activity to support independent completion of the task;
• QR codes for ease of submission.

Entries can be completed using any medium (drawing, painting, mixed media, photography, digital illustration, etc).

Deadline for entries: 23.59 on 13th March 2022

Create The Future welcomes facilitators and entrants to take full ownership of the activity, and to extend the reach of the project by promoting it through their organisation.

Ideas for delivery
The competition activity could be: delivered as single activity session; promoted to young people and their families to complete at home for those who wish to enter; offered as part of a longer term enrichment project by community groups or schools. There is great scope to extend the postcard creating activity through activities such as:

• Using role-play to engender ideas for the art and writing tasks;

• Utilising a broad range of arts, crafts, model making, technology, and/or photography to create images for the postcards (i.e create a scene using small world play and photograph it);

• Creative writing / poetry / rap exercises to develop the written element of the postcard;

• Presenting or exhibiting young people’s finished projects in community spaces;

• Any other ideas that facilitators of the project may have… the more creative, the better!

Judging and prizes

• All entries to be showcased in an online gallery;
• Winning entries to be published in a global anthology alongside experts, academics, and creative writers;
• Additional prizes TBC;
• Postcards judged on their own merits. We celebrate equality, diversity and creativity… having the best art equipment does not increase chances of winning!
