Full SoW, PowerPoints and resources for a transition from KS3 to GCSE. Range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts covered in preparation for creative writing. Written as 10 lessons, but may take longer as there is a lot of content to get through. Students work is assessed at three points throughout the unit:
1 - peer assessment; students set own targets based on feedback
2 - formative assessment of mini task; teacher sets targets
3- final summative assessment.
L1: Starting point creative writing task; peer assessment and target-setting.
L2 &3: Touching the Void - identifying descriptive techniques in action and building tension. Thinking about tone; revision of paragraphing; writing task and self-assessment.
L4: Frankenstein - Intro to Mary Shelley, Romanticism, 19th century non-fiction; close reading of extract from the novel; building vocabulary.
L5 & 6: Mini-milestone assessment - writing task; intro to Sherlock Holmes; feedback from task and reflection/improvement time.
L7 & 8: ‘The Final Problem’ - characterisation, Conan Doyle’s style, dialogue.
L9: options to explore in depth in light of mini-milestone assessment and class interest.
L10: Final assessment - final written task, student voice survey. Final grade handed back at earliest convenience.
