This resource uses other resources from the TES website. It is the basis of a unit on Poverty in Africa that I use with my S2 class in Scotland. This resource has been amended following feedback received from kee88ly. Following comments from globalthinker I changed the title as my intention is to show how certain problems cause poverty. I could just as easily have looked at problems that create poverty in Glasgow. I am a teacher in a single teacher department in a Scottish school and I would welcome some more feedback on this resource. Thanks.

George - I can see that you have spent a huge amount of time on creating this resource and it is full of your good intentions. However, I need to be honest and say that I think this resource has the potential to be extremely damaging to children's perceptions of the African Continent. You have presented a one-dimensional view of the entire African Continent as being uniformly poor and riddled with disease, famine, corruption and conflict. You have not presented any notion whatsoever of any type of diversity within an entire continent of 54 countries, and in doing so, you risk reinforcing the already negative stereotypes that so many children and adults hold of the African Continent. Where to begin...? Can I first advise you to watch and reflect on the excellent TED talk "A Single Story" by Chimamanda Adichie? and then to explore quality resources such as Global Thinking's "A Teacher's Guide to Exploring Perceptions of Africa" http://www.global-thinking.org.uk/resources and many others available from Risc http://www.risc.org.uk/education and the Global Dimension website here http://globaldimension.org.uk .
