A complete package of resources to teach a topic on Proteins (part of a topic on Biomolecules).
Includes:
- Lesson-by-lesson plan / Scheme of work
- A list of resources you will need to teach the lessons
- Power Point
- Note booklet for students to fill in during lessons (matches Power Point)
This resource is designed and created to teach the following Edexcel SNAB spec points:
2.9 i)Know the basic structure of an amino acid (structures of specific amino acids are not required).
ii)Understand the formation of polypeptides and proteins (as amino acid monomers linked by peptide bonds in condensation reactions).
iii)Understand the significance of a protein’s primary structure in determining its three-dimensional structure and properties (globular and fibrous proteins and types of bonds involved in three dimensional structure).
iv)Know the molecular structure of a globular protein and a fibrous protein and understand how their structures relate to their functions (including haemoglobin and collagen).
However, activities and resources can be adapted for different exam boards and specifications.
Content includes:
- The chemistry of proteins
- Structure of amino acids
- Primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structures in proteins including bonding that occurs at each stage.
- The difference between globular and fibrous proteins
Activities:
- Video links
- Students use beads and pipecleaners to create their own proteins
- A fibrous vs globular protein card sort with answers
- Exam questions and answers
- Gap fill activity with answers
