The lengthy step for factoring by grouping and solving the 2 binomials are unnecessary.<br /> Example. Solve: x^2 + 31x + 108 = 0. Solving means finding 2 numbers knowing sum (-31) and product (108). Both roots are negative (Rule of Signs). Compose factor pairs of (c = 108). Proceed: (-1, -108)(-2, -54)(-3, -36)(-4, -27). OK. This last sum is -4 - 27 = -31 = -b. Then, the 2 real roots are: -4 and -27. No factoring !
