Chaim Soutine in his quotes - the Russian-born artist on painting & his artistic life in France - free resource for pupils, students and teachers in French art history

.
In his artist-quotes Chaim Soutine expresses a. o. his strong adoration for the Dutch painter Rembrandt. He tells moreover about an inner cry from his Russian youth, which he always tried to express in his paintings he produced in France. Soutine has become famous by his many dynamic, wild, rough French landscapes, portraits and still life’s, painted with a visibly-raw gesture on the canvas.

He traveled as young Russian artist already to Paris, and lived and worked there with other young artists like Zadkine and his friend Modigliani. They all had their studio in the factory-building La Ruche in Paris, France. Soutine became specially famous for his characteristic dynamic landscape paintings. He kept himself far from French Cubism and Fauvism.

  • ’You have no right to interfere with my art. Your wife is not your property. I need her, in order to finish my picture, I must have her! I will sue you! (to the husband of his model).’ - quote of Soutine, in: ‘Life with the painters of La Ruche’, Vorobëv Marevna, Macmillan, New York, 1972, p. 156
