This is a complete unit of work aimed for Year 8 originally that helps students plan out their arguments and write concise, coherent and persuasive speeches. It teaches them about Aristotle’s Three Pillars of Rhetoric, introduces them to famous speeches by Martin Luther King, Jr, Malala Yousafzai, and Winston Churchill, as well as a stretch task on Boris Johnson. Using the same methods of Hochman and Wexler’s ‘The Writing Revolution’ , the unit is designed to help students gradually build up their persuasive paragraphs by topic sentences, then adding more ideas in developed paragraphs.

The main assessment is to write a speech on a topic of their choice.

It includes:
the booklet
persuasive writing features mat
SOW outline
speech writing template
