This lesson enables pupils to look, in detail, at how the Ghost of Christmas Past is described in ‘A Christmas Carol’ and explore how each aspect is symbolic. Lesson is differentiated. Pupils carousel around the room to look at aspects of the ghost which might be symbolic (e.g. the fact that the ghost changes from old to young continuously could symbolise to Scrooge that he can change to act like a younger, happier man) and provides pupils with handy hints so that they can fully explore the symbolism used. Pupils then are shown a model of how to answer the learning objective, complete with success criteria, and write their own. This lesson is challenging but students really enjoy it and think in depth about the text.
