How story writing benefits KS2 pupils learning French vocabulary.

Looking for ideas on how to teach MFL to your KS2 primary class? In this programme, teacher Janice Dykes bases her lesson on a story of a Madagascan lemur which contains repetitive sequences of narrative. Janice encourages the children to join in with the French narrative and add actions as she reads the story to her class. As they become familiar with the story and vocabulary, the pupils gain the confidence to then work in groups and write their own short story based on the same format, and add their own actions.

Excellent resource to tap into to begin a writing project in any target language. I really like the steps from story to scaffolding writing in the target language. I equally appreciate the teacher's strategies to support learners to remember not only new vocabulary but also the book language such as; 'très très petit' with the appropriate gestures. Altogether a lesson engaging learners with stories in another language with the purpose to support and develop writing in the target language. What a great outcome! Thank you.

That was a great idea, it inspired me to teach stories and a good example of how to teach it, which they forgot to mention in NC :/). Also there is nothing wrong with saying 'boy noun' they will learn the proper term later on! Well done and Thank you!

I thought this was an original idea and exemplifying something that is rarely seen in primary French classrooms: getting children to produce extended discourse texts.

I was impressed until the teacher said singe--this is a boy word! Never, never say this, teach masculine and feminine nouns right from the start--or how will you explain that eg le chien had puppies without digging a hole for yourself explaining la chienne etc? After all we teach acurate vocabulary across other subjects.
