This extensive unit will support locational studies (Asia); physical geography (Earthquakes and tectonic plate activity); and studies of natural disasters. In many areas of the world where tectonic plate edges contact earthquakes minor and sometimes major occur. The area of this study in Sichuan China is particularly prone to earthquakes. Often the world shakes and resettles. However on May 12th 2008 a major earthquake hit this region causing widespread damage, high loss of life and massive dislocation to infrastructure. This unit examines the cause; the extent and the impact. This material has been used at secondary level in Australian schools. The visual material has also been used at upper primary level. Maps indicate location and extent. The world map introduces tectonic plates. Photographs reveal damage and the problems of rescue efforts - particularly in the more remote and less developed mountain areas. This unit can stand alone or it can be integrated with materials with an Asian focus. The added attachments provide check and summary worksheets. The 21st century worksheet broadens the earthquake theme. Start in the mountains of the cover image. Reveal the the events of the earthquake and in summary return to the opening scene in the epilogue to see if anything has changed.

Thank you! Very useful particularly because you took a larger view than my text book and showed how the terrain meant rescuers arrived too late.
