The Iron Man - Guided Reading - 15 Lesson Unit

A Complete 15-lesson guided reading unit for the book ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. This unit focuses on quality activities that improve children’s key reading comprehension skills such as reading fluency, retrieval and inference. Suitable for Key Stage 2.

This pack contains a total of 15 lesson PowerPoints, a selection of worksheets and SEN support worksheets for every single lesson where there is a worksheet allowing all children to access the work. There are also 3 bonus lessons at the end where the children are able to create a book review, meaning there are 18 lessons in total.

The 15 lessons cover the entire book, suitably split up into daily chunks. Please note, due to the short-nature of the book, some lessons repeat sections of the book but with a different focus e.g. retrieval of Chapter 1 and then inference of Chapter 1.

Each lesson follows roughly the same format:

The lesson’s learning goal;
An inference starter - a short activity that engages the children’s inference skills. The theme of the inference starters change weekly;
A reading out loud challenge - get your students reading out loud by engaging in a short, usually funny, activity that challenges their diction, reading fluency and expression. The theme of the reading out loud challenges change weekly;
A summary starter that challenges children to summarise what they have read so far;
Vocabulary pre-teaching - every lesson contains the key words to help all children access that lesson’s section of the book, they are encouraged to use their phonics when the word is phonetically decodable;
An activity to complete in books after that day’s reading. This could be a set of questions, a short writing task or even sketching a scene from the story. Whatever the activity, it is directly relates to the learning goal and that lesson’s section of the story to ensure it gets the children talking about the book and fosters a love for reading alongside developing their comprehension skills.
