To Big to Fail explores how the lack of intercultural awareness can lose business, and create huge problems. When a $5 billion dollar deal goes wrong, and the world is thrown into a financial crisis which ruins lives.
Based on the 2011 movie “Too Big to Fail”, about the events leading up to the 2008 financial crisis. The material focuses specifically on the breakdown in negotiations between Lehman Brothers and the Korean Development Bank. The options for developing the content further through debate, discussion, further research, and so on are vast. We look at a few concepts behind cultural values and the contrasts between Asian and Western communication (high vs. low context) which contribute to misunderstandings. We also look at some of the knock on effects, such as how the crisis hit Dubai.
We take a look at how the international bank HSBC used Intercultural Intelligence in their award winning world-wide marketing campaign “The world’s local bank”.
The material is an introduction level for Intercultural Communication, but is designed for more advanced students (10th, 11th, 12th grade, college, adult learners, corporate, teacher training, ESL high levels adult learners. The content can be used over several lessons, or can serve as a basis for a class or group project on intercultural communication.
