This EYFS/ SEND resource supports shape recognition and fine motor control through tracing and discussion.
It includes:
1 page with 12 basic shapes (e.g., circle, triangle, star, pentagon, heart, diamond) to trace over dotted outlines.
10 pages featuring the same shapes again, but each shape contains a related pattern, number (of sides) or object to trace (e.g., egg for oval, kite for diamond, starfish for star, clock for circle).
Children trace the outer shape and colour in the picture inside - talking about the objects they see and how they relate to the shapes.
Ideal for early shape learning, handwriting preparation, and classroom discussions about everyday objects linked to shapes.
Extension ideas:
- Shape Hunt – Give children real objects (like a ball, a clock, a toy star, a photo frame) and ask them to match each one to the correct traced shape.
- Sorting Station – Set up a table with real items (e.g., buttons, pebbles, heart decorations) and let children sort them into groups based on their shapes.
- Children look around the environment for specific objects related to shape.
