TSUNAMI 2 - SEPTEMBER 2018 SULAWESI - CAUSE, IMPACTS AND HUMAN RESPONSES

This unit deals with the September 28th tsunami which impacted sections of the Indonesian Island of Sulawesi. At the time of preparing this information (Less than 2 months after the event) some of the information has been provided as estimates of impact. The unit begins by providing maps about location and a concept diagram which highlights possible causes. Students can then follow the trail of tsunami waves from their source region onto the nearby coast. The major populated concentrations of Donggala (coastline) and Palu City (Coastal edge of the sea gulf) are presented by map and photogaphs. The human face of the tsunami which caused widespread devastation, destruction ,loss of life and injury is included. Students can use their computers to find and gains information from a specified file of 49 photographs. By screening the numbers indicated students will be able to answer set questions to gain further understanding about the impact of this tsunami on residents affected by this tsunami. In terms of physical geography this unit includes the natural processes of earthquake, land slides and the associated occurrence of liquefaction. The relocation of thousands of residents from Palu City has made them refugees in their own country. Recovery will take months and some of the rebuilding may take years. The 5 attachments will give you the opportunity to provide in class activities or use the large screen to promote discussion and come to conclusions.
