This is a 10-20 minute assembly about the refugee crisis in Ukraine and Eastern Europe. It is suitable for KS3, KS4 & KS5 (Ages 11-18, Years 7-13, Grade 6-12) and has been used for a tutor time Citizenship session for the whole school. It focuses on:

  • What is a refugee?
  • Summary of Ukranian refugee crisis
  • What the UK are doing to help
  • Organisations that are helping
  • Downloaded video (that will never disappear) from the news explaining how some refugees are facing delays to get in the UK
  • Downloaded video (that will never disappear) about an 11 year old boy who travelled 750 miles from Ukraine alone to reach his family.
  • Debate question regarding the £350 a month the UK government will give to anyone taking in Ukranian refugees
  • How this connects to Fundamental British Values
  • How this connects to the UN Rights of a Child
  • Reflection and discussion points throughout
  • Extra links so students can research further (mainly for online platforms etc or you are using it for a longer lesson)
  • Links to newsround and bbc news website for a look at the news today.
  • Logos, pictures and photos used throughout for visual cues and learners.

This session is narrated but this can easily be changed by deleting the icon on each slide if you would prefer. There are no written activities but this could easily be adapted to a whole lesson for Citizenship, Social Studies or can be used as a whole school resource.

All proceeds of this resource will be donated to Save the Children for the work they are doing with Ukranian refugee children. All I ask is that you leave a review!
