Week 1 Year 5 English lessons on Sky Hawk by Gill Lewis (writing a diary entry)

This week-long English resource is based on Sky Hawk by Gill Lewis is designed for Year 5 learners. It includes five separate days of lessons in one PowerPoint. The lessons are a part of a three-week cycle of work, and this is week one.

The cycle is designed to help learners improve their writing skills, with the ultimate outcome being to write a diary entry as Iona, a character from the book. The lesson plan focuses on three target skills that learners need to master in order to successfully complete the writing task, these are; subordinate clauses, fronted adverbials of time, place and manner, and consistent use of the past tense.

This week’s lessons incorporates a range of activities designed to facilitate student engagement with the model text and to develop the skills necessary to achieve the desired outcome. Specifically, the lessons features a hook lesson to effectively engage learners, as well as interactive lessons focused on understanding the structure of the model text. Additionally, a short burst writing task is included to provide students with an opportunity to practice and apply the skills they have learned.

The lessons are differentiated and includes necessary documents, including the model text based on Sky Hawk, and information sheets on ospreys, which is a key element in the story. Additionally, there is a differentiated PowerPoint for lower-ability children that need to focus on sentence structure, using colourful semantics. This PowerPoint can be used with a separate group, as an additional intervention, or integrated into the whole class lesson.

By using these comprehensive and differentiated lessons, teachers can ensure that all learners can achieve success in their writing, regardless of their ability level.
