This week-long English resource is designed for Year 5 learners and is based on the captivating novel Sky Hawk by Gill Lewis. It is part of a comprehensive three-week cycle aimed at enhancing learners’ writing skills, culminating in the creation of a diary entry as the character Iona.
The resource consists of five days of engaging and interactive lessons, carefully crafted to address key writing skills. Throughout the cycle, students will focus on mastering subordinate clauses, fronted adverbials of time, place, and manner, as well as maintaining consistent use of the past tense. In addition, the resource provides opportunities for students to develop their understanding of the challenges faced by endangered animals.
In week three of the cycle, students will delve deeper into the minds of the characters, enabling them to authentically plan and write their own diary entry. To provide valuable support and scaffolding, the resource includes a planning template that guides students through the process and helps organise their ideas. Additionally, to save teachers time, completed examples are provided, serving as models for students and facilitating a clearer understanding of expectations.
To add a touch of creativity, the resource also includes an osprey-themed writing page border, providing a beautiful platform to showcase learners’ completed work.
This resource also includes a differentiated PowerPoint for learners that need to focus on sentence structure, using colourful semantics. This PowerPoint can be used with a separate group, as an additional intervention, or integrated into the whole class lesson.
