If you are looking for a ready made classroom activity that can involve a mixture of on screen discussion, use of student knowledge and opportunity for student research then this unit will fit the requirement. This standalone activity is one in a series that will expand student locational and global knowledge as it poses the basic question of "where in the world are…"
Well you could provide printed sheets with maps and tables showing the TEN TOP ISLANDS but if you do that then that takes away the challenge of discovery and allows for the possibility that the material will remain rather lifeless and forgotten. Most students like the challenge of discovery and when/if they become involved in the process they will remember the names and possibly the order of the islands they discover. How about starting with a blank screen and ask for suggestions of the TEN TOP ISLANDS (by area). You should get a few - some will be in the top ten and some will not. THEN screen page 2 with the country flags. You can then remove those islands from the initial list that are not on the flag list. The next activity is to screen the table of the TOP TEN ISLANDS with its many blanks. Your students should have a hard copy of that page. HONSHU JAPAN is provided as an example of the fill in. THEN show the screens with the outline of the TOP TEN ISLANDS. Some of those may be known and can possibly be placed in the correct rank order. There are additional clues for those who look carefully. Once you have a few islands in the correct slots the final order becomes easier. Oh! If you do become stumped there is help available in the final pages but hopefully you won’t need that. To consolidate the locational knowledge there is a world map which provides an opportunity for students to have their own record of the TOP TEN. There will be other units in the TOP…whatever series.
