This document specifically looks at the use of setting in Jean Rhys' novel Wide Sargasso Sea as a key device in the decent and development of the characters. It contains an overview of the various locations used, but it also has six pages of analysed quotes from the book to look at how the setting is used symbolically for Antoinette and Rochester. Due to Rhys's extensive use of devices in this area of the novel, it can be particularly useful for achieving A02 in WJEC board at AS as well as to form the basis of analysis at A2 coursework.
