Looking for fun Christmas and Winter Maths operations games? Your students will love these low-prep activities for EYSF. They will practice adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing numbers and increase their speed, confidence and accuracy in working out or recalling number operations. These Roll, Add, Calculate and Find activities will help to consolidate number fact fluency, which is an essential mathematical skill.
These games are a great way of working on quick mental recall of times tables facts as students have to find a specific answer rather than go through the times tables by rote.
The games are for students to play in pairs. Use them as part of an addition/ subtraction/ multiplication or division lesson to practice these skills or a stand-alone activity for students who need extra practice with this and prefer to play games rather than do lots of maths sheets. Checking that their friends have got the correct answer means that they have instant feedback if they have the answer right and if they disagree, they can work it out together. This will encourage discussion about maths operations.
They can use the 2-12 times tables square provided to check instantly or rely on remembering their times tables. Playing games such as these will give a competitive element for students to be super engaged and try harder.
We may know these number facts and patterns instinctively but students will gain a lot by having these mathematical concepts highlighted. These are great conversations to have over a fun game so that maths thinking becomes fluid and students have several number patterns and strategies to fall back on that will help them with mental maths and when they are multiplying numbers in the future.
