A “framework” for three/four weeks of data handling lessons, based upon data about the world. The resource intends to educate and spark discussion about pertinent issues - inequality, carbon emissions - while teaching specific GCSE data handling content.

Data is provided about countries’:

Median income per person
Mean yearly CO2 emissions
Population
Life expectancy

Data samples can be printed and provided to students. Students should be encouraged to be critical, to ask questions and to make their own hypotheses. This motivates the learning of specific data handling skills.

Data is sourced from Gapminder.org. The slides include links to other excellent Gapminder resources.

“Standard” practice of skills is not included in the slides; this can be slotted in, appropriate to the level of your group. The slides are adaptable for KS3, GCSE Foundation or GCSE Higher.

Skills:

Time series graphs
Scatter graphs
Averages (mean/median/mode)
Range
Cumulative frequency diagrams
Boxplots
Histograms

Files:

Lesson slides (pptx)
Easily printable data samples (docx)
Complete data sheet (xlsx)

Fantastic set of lessons, the students were actually interested in doing calculations and good to see Gapminder used in lessons :)
