This presentation plus resources draws on the AQA style of essay writing but could be adapted for any spec for Year 10/11 pupils.

Lesson plan below:

STARTER: INDIVIDUAL - Re-cap on the wording of the English Literature GCSE mark scheme. Pupils match the keywords of the mark scheme to the five bands using a printed task sheet.

TASK 1: PAIRS - Pupils are given extracts from four exemplar pupil-written essays all of Band 4 and Band 5 standard to ensure that pupils are being challenged with writing of the highest standard.

Using a pupil-friendly mark scheme, they are required to:

Award a band and mark out of 40 for each extract.
Highlight where they think this band is met in the extract. Pupils are provided with prompts such as: which phrases strike as sophisticated and perceptive? Where has the candidate analysed language?
Pupils use sentence starters and keywords to write up a paragraph to justify their decision.

TASK 2: WHOLE-CLASS - Feedback as to marks awarded; answers revealed and justification discussed.

TASK 3: INDEPENDENT - Using the exemplar as a basis, pupils write a Band 5 paragraph based on their chosen texts. They focus on ‘sophisticated’ and ‘perceptive’ qualities as demonstrated in the samples.

PLENARY: Pupils swap paragraphs and peer-assess according to the mark scheme.
