I have used this lesson twice on a Y1 interview lesson and got the job both times!

It’s the perfect lesson- starts with a letter being received from a princess trapped in the tower! In the letter, she has enclosed the writing on the wall that she needs help with. The only way t he children can solve the problems is by working out a series of addition questions. Then each number links to a letter and the children have to work out the individual letters and then form a word. It’s differentiated 4 ways and so each group work out each word and then the whole class comes together to write the message back to the princess.

The children have always showed a lot of engagement and enthusiasm.
Within the lesson plan, it shows you can also differentiate through resources too. Eg: One group used counters, another number line and another partitioning. But of course, the methods used will depend on your school strategy.
