Year 2 Autumn Week 3 Numeracy lessons on place value.

An additional week of place value lessons for students, which focus on place value and addition and subtraction. The lessons all start with a 10 minute mental warm up session, followed by a main class teaching session. The presentations finish with a suggestion of different differentiated teaching activities a student could try.

Lesson 1: Week 3

Mental Warm Up: Count in steps of 20.

Lesson 2: Week 3

Mental Warm Up: If I want to have a total of 10. Adding and subtracting ideas
Main Lesson Idea: Today we are going to add tens.
Educational Challenges  Play ‘Collect the tens’.
 Play ‘Collect the tens’ using two dice 1-6.
 Play ‘Collect the tens’ without apparatus or hundred squares to help. Start by playing with two dice 1-6.

Lesson 3: Week 3
Title Place Value, Addition and Subtraction
Learning Objective:  add and subtract multiples of 10 mentally
 read and write numerals.
Mental Warm Up: We are going to play bingo again.
Main Lesson Idea: Today we are going to add and subtract tens, finding quick ways to check the answers.
Educational Challenges  Pretend to be teachers. Make up your own questions and answers.
 Sort out correct / wrong number sentence cards. Make up some of your own.

Lesson 4: Week 3

Learning Objective:  add 10 to a two-digit number
 add a one-digit number to a multiple of 10
 understand and begin to read ‘10 more’
 recombine and know what each digit represents.
Mental Warm Up: Look at these sums - Say if they are right or wrong.
Main Lesson Idea: Today we are going to add 10 to different numbers.
Educational Challenges  Work in Pairs. Take a 100 square. Count on 10. Colour in square. What do you notice?
 Continue working on the ‘10 more monsters’ work.
 Work on individual ‘10 more monsters’. Try with multiples of 10 bigger than 100.
