Design a Socialist State: A Level Politics

(0)
A group discussion activity designed to introduce students to socialist views on the role of the state and different strands of socialism. Contains 5 A3 country profiles of fictional nations and discussion questions. Designed to enable students to discuss how their state might transition from capitalism to socialism (revolution or through gradualism), the extent of government power in their state, the extent to which democracy is possible in a socialist state, the extent to which they will allow elements of private enterprise, and the consequences of these choices. I’ve found this to be a good way to introduce some lively critical discussion into the topic before introducing the different strands of socialism. As you move through the topic, you can relate the tensions and disagreements within socialism to their discussions and their socialist state.
