He runs away to Bombay where he is befriended by a kindly old watchmender who teaches him his trade. Meanwhile, at home in the village, his sister Lila looks after the family. With the kindly assistance of a visiting family from Bombay, Lila manages to get her mother into the hospital in the nearby town. By the end of the novel their mother is cured and their father has given up drinking. Hari returns to the village with the money he has earned in Bombay, his new skills as a watchmender, and hope for the future. This is a beautifully written novel by the writer Anita Desai.
