Pupils sort notes about the Chinese Lung Dragon into categories for a non-chronological report. They then use these categorised notes to write their own non-chronological report about the Chinese Lung Dragon. This can be incorporated into study of the Chinese New Year. Pupils enjoy reading and sorting the 30 facts about the lung dragon. This engaging activity can be done individually or in pairs. The following resources are provided: • Uncategorised notes about the Chinese Lung Dragon • Worksheet with grid • Answer sheet Differentiation The task is differentiated three ways. It is made less complex with a simplified list with only 20 facts and a simplified grid with fewer categories. It is made more complex with a grid without headings (pupils must decide their own). All differentiated sheets have been provided. This resource works well with the example non-chronological report about the Knucker Dragon, to provide an exemplar for children’s own report writing. Example text demonstrating dialogue writing with direct speech based on the novel Christophe’s Story by Nicki Cornwell. The example text is based on Chapter 2 of the novel, when Rwandan refugee Christophe is bullied by schoolboy Jeremy. A writing feature identification worksheet and an answer sheet are included. The extract from Christophe’s Story is also included. The model text is useful as a WAGOLL for children to study before attempting to write their own version or continuing the model text. Two example diary entries from the point of view of Christophe from the children’s novel Christophe’s Story by Nicki Cornwell. These exemplar diary entries are perfect to use as WAGOLLs after reading Chapter 1 of the text. The first model diary entry comes with a feature find worksheet for children to fill in, plus answer sheet. This can be easily edited to vary the challenge level and provide differentiation. After identifying features, pupils can write their own diary entries based on the example texts. Pupils examine the personality of Hogarth in this character trait matching exercise. Pupils match the character traits of Hogarth from The Iron Man (also known as The Iron Giant) by Ted Hughes with evidence from the text and a definition of that character trait. The quotes from the text have been provided, alongside the definitions. This resource has been differentiated three ways: • Higher ability: 9 quotes, character traits and definitions have been provided. • Middle ability: 6 quotes, character traits and definitions have been provided. • Lower ability: 6 quotes have been provided, with the character traits and definitions combined. This activity is a great way for pupils to think carefully about how a character’s personality is revealed by what they do and how they react in a story. Two activities and a quiz involving identifying correctly and incorrectly punctuated contractions. Pupils must look carefully at the sentences to check if the apostrophes for omission have been put in the correct place for a variety of contracted words. There are three activities provided: ✽ Contractions Quiz: pupils identify whether each sentence is correctly or incorrectly punctuated. This quiz is great to use as a starter or plenary with the whole class with pupils working independently or in pairs. Each sentence contains one or more contractions, or words that are often confused with contractions, that have been correctly or incorrectly punctuated. Each answer is revealed and explained on the next slide. ✽ Contractions Card Sort: pupils sort the cards into correct and incorrect piles. Great for paired or small group work. Both large and small versions are provided, plus an answer sheet. ✽ Contractions Worksheet: pupils select the correct use of omission apostrophes and spelling of the contractions used in sentences. They also add missing contractions to sentences. Great as an independent assessment task. ✽ Contraction Word Bank: can be used by SEN or lower ability pupils to support them while carrying out these activities. This word bank is also a useful reference sheet for independent writing activities. These two collections of 30 daily activities will help to teach, assess and consolidate your pupils’ understanding of the grammar, punctuation and spelling curriculum to improve their writing for half a term. Six weeks’ worth of daily activities are included on each presentation, so 12 weeks of daily activities altogether. The answers to each activity is on next slide to aid class discussion. Each presentation has over 120 slides. These can be used as daily registration activities, English/Literacy lesson starter activities, plenaries, end of the day activities, and more. This resource bundle requires no photocopying, just a screen and somewhere for the children to note down their answers (English books, general work books or mini-whiteboards). Can also be used as revision for KS3 pupils. Editable PowerPoint presentations and PDF documents provided. The Owl and the Pussy-Cat vocabulary cards and two presentations to support the teaching of all three verses of the poem The Owl and the Pussy-Cat by Edward Lear to EYFS or Key Stage 1 pupils. All selected 29 words/phrases from the poem contain matching images. Vocabulary cards The vocabulary cards can be used as a glossary, or cut out and used as a matching activity or as flashcards. These are particularly useful for pupils with English as an additional language (EAL) and pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) to pre-teach the vocabulary before reading the poem, and again mid-unit. The cards can also be used as a glossary for all pupils to refer to while studying the poem to aid understanding. The cards can be printed onto A3 and displayed in the classroom as a visual reminder. Vocabulary Presentation The 59 slide presentation can be used to pre-teach the vocabulary, to test pupils or to prompt the class as they recite the lines to help pupils to memorize the poem. Poem Presentation A 31 slide presenation, with each line of the poem on a different slide. The key words/phrases have been blanked out and replaced with an image to represent that word/phrase. This presentation can be used to help pupils to recite the poem, the images acting as cues to aid recall. Copy of the poem A copy of all three verses of the poem is also included.
