Lesson: What did the Romans build after they settled in Britain?
This lesson looks at the different buildings and structures that the Romans introduced to Britain to improve the efficiency of society. Pupils will be introduced to new vocabulary and then research Roman roads and aqueducts. There is a choice of activities; pupils will either map out some key Roman roads or they will make their own aqueduct model and test it out with running water.
Objectives:
To explain how the landscape of Britain was changed by what the Romans built
To give examples of how the Romans designed buildings and structures to make a more efficient society

There is also a grammar focus on using adverbials of time and place and a chance to develop thesaurus skills.
Unit 2: Performance Poetry (10 lessons)
A two-week literacy unit of poetry planning based on performing poems set in imaginary words and built around the new curriculum literacy objectives. In this unit, pupils will read and listen to magical world poems by Lewis Carroll and they will consider how the sounds and language patterns come alive when the poems are read aloud. Children will work towards creating their own magical poems set in imaginary worlds and then they will perform them aloud, adding sound effects.
Unit 3: Instructions (10 lessons)
The ten lessons in this unit aim to give children the opportunity to understand the features of instructions as a genre. In the first week, children will engage with the text type by following instructions to make edible Roman roads out of biscuits, chocolates and custard! There is also a grammar focus on using prepositions and imperative verbs. In the second week, pupils will use drama to develop ideas and extend their vocabulary. They will then plan their own set of instructions about becoming Roman gladiator champions and they will then have the opportunity to draft, edit and present their final instructions.

In this unit, pupils will read and listen to spooky poems by Walter de la Mare and they will consider how the sounds and language patterns come alive when the poems are read aloud. A two-week literacy unit of work for K/1stGrade, containing lesson plans and pupil resources, looking at some of Lear's most funny and imaginative poems. In this unit pupils will:
- listen to classic poems by Edward Lear
- investigate the sounds and language patterns of the poem
- make a comic version of 'The Owl and the Pussycat'
- identify rhyming words and patterns
- make a new version of the poem 'The Jumblies'
- prepare and give a performance to an audience

Christina Rossetti - 2 week unit
A two-week literacy unit of work for 1st/2nd Grade, including lesson plans and pupil resources, looking at some classic poems by Rossetti containing with animal and mythological characters. In these lessons pupils will:
- read and listen to classic poems by Christina Rossetti
- investigate the effects of sounds and poetic language
- use question punctuation
- write their own rhyming patterns
- use their voices expressively in different ways
- create their own version of one of the poems
- prepare and perform a poem to an audience
