Performing Poetry
Alfred Lord Tennyson - 2 week unit
A two-week literacy unit of work for 4th/5th Grade, containing lesson plans and pupil resources, looking at some of Tennyson's vivid poetic imagery about sea monsters and war heroes. In this unit pupils will:
- read and listen to classic poems by Alfred Lord Tennyson
- research the historical and literary context of the poems
- engage imaginatively with poetic language
- create their own sea monster poem inspired by 'The Kraken'
- turn a narrative poem into a comic strip
- identify poetic devices in the poem and explain their effects
- express the mood of a poem through performance
- prepare and give a performance to an audience
The poems include 'The Kraken' and 'The Charge of the Light Brigade'
A two-week literacy unit of poetry planning for 2nd/3rd Grade, based on performing poems with a spooky theme.
In this unit, pupils will read and listen to spooky poems by Walter de la Mare and they will consider how the sounds and language patterns come alive when the poems are read aloud. Children will work towards creating their own spooky poems with a haunted atmosphere and then they will perform them aloud, adding sound effects.
The aims of the unit for pupils are:
• To listen to classic and narrative poems being read aloud
• To consider how a poet creates a 'haunted' atmosphere
• To prepare a poetry performance by planning sound effects
• To perform a poem to an audience using an appropriate pace
• To engage with a poet’s use of imaginative language

Pupils will listen to the Trojan Horse story and analyse the evidence to decide which parts of the story are likely to be based on true events. Pupils will use their analysis to form a structured response to the question Did the story of the Trojan Horse really happen?, before being left with a challenge to imagine their own trick to break through the walls of Troy.
