This is a ten-lesson unit of work based around the book ‘Escape from Pompeii’ by Christina Balit, designed for Year 3 and Year 4. The ten lessons in this unit aim to give children the opportunity to read and listen to the Escape from Pompeii story a number of times. In the first week, children will engage with the text through discussion, drama and even creating a parachute volcanic eruption in order to increase their familiarity with the story. They will have the opportunity to articulate ideas about the text using an increasingly varied vocabulary. There is a grammar focus on using powerful verbs and a chance to develop thesaurus skills. In the second week, pupils will plan their own story based on the structure of Escape from Pompeii and they will then have the opportunity to draft, edit and present their final narrative. This two-week unit of English work, based on the book ‘The Great Kapok Tree’, works well alongside topics about rainforests, sustainability and Mayans. It can also be used as a standalone English unit. The resources are designed for Year 3 and Year 4. Back to School activity; Make a time capsule to seal and open at the end of the school year. A first week back essential! This is an ideal project for getting to know your new class. Make an ‘All About Me’ time capsule envelope to seal up and save and then watch the delight on pupils’ faces as they open them up again at the end of the school year! In this All About Me activity, pupils fill in two fun activity sheets about themselves. They seal their All About Me sheets in an envelope and decorate a time capsule label for the front. Be as creative as you like with the envelope decoration - glitter, stickers, pens or paints! Then the teacher saves the All About Me time capsule envelopes and returns them at the end of the year to be opened. 6. How to Rule a Dynasty: What did the rulers of the Shang Dynasty do? In this lesson pupils will be introduced to the story of the first king of the Shang Dynasty, King Tang of Shang. They will work in groups to prepare dramas based on his story. Pupils will then consider the arguments for and against Shang kings taking prisoners of war and they will write and deliver a persuasive argument to support or oppose this practice.
