Two differentiated Venn Diagrams for use with KS1 children or less able KS2 children. The first sheet sorts on a single criteria (whether the animal is nocturnal or not) and the second sheet sorts on two criteria, with overlap (animals that live on land/water). Also don't miss the opportunity for discussion around animals that go outside the circles on the second Venn Diagram!
Use these scenario cards to generate discussions in small groups and support your pupils in understanding the choices they can make and the consequences of these choices.\n\nDifferentiated with simpler two choice scenarios, a three choice scenario and one scenario where a choice is left blank for the children to decide what other choice could be made.
One week’s worth of maths mastery planning for Early Years based on number bonds to 5. Planning, PowerPoint and activities for an engaging poetry unit based around a Fire of London topic. My Year 2s produced some excellent quality poetry that they were very proud of. I have included two examples of the children's poems (before and after editing) that you could share with your class. Each planned lesson is accompanied by the resources required to deliver it. The unit touches on many objectives from the 2013 English National Curriculum (Key Stage 1) and the main ones are listed at the beginning of the planning document. There was a spelling and grammar focus of adding -ing to verbs and using expanded noun phrases. I hope your class enjoy it as much as we did!
This unit contains:

Our children have a target of being able to tell a number story from a given number sentence. The first slide gives the children a number story and relates it to a calculation (which follows on from their prior learning). Aligned with Common Core State Standards: 1.OA.1, Operations and Algebraic Thinking.
Comprehensive KS2 unit of work on recounts based around a school trip or school event but could easily be adapted for other recount subject matter. The planning uses Red Nose Day as a model and was originally written for Year 3, also suitable for Year 4.
The unit of 6 lessons follows the composition progression laid out in the National Curriculum - plan, draft and write, evaluate and edit, including proof-reading. Planning includes ideas for cutaway and pullback groups and EAL/SEN activities. All resources required to deliver the unit of work are included in this download. There are starter activities as pdfs, but if you would like to change any of these, or edit the success criteria to suit your class, there are also editable powerpoint slides for you to adapt. Children write the Easter story in their own keepsake booklet. There are 10 pages for writing on in total, including a reflection page at the end. Each page has simple illustrations for the children to colour and space to write about the Easter story. Print the pdf as is, double-sided, and make sure you tick the ‘flip on the short edge’ option. The booklet will print out in the correct order and you simply need to fold the pages in half.

Children experiment with applique, running stitch, back stitch and over-sewing in this textiles unit of work. They design, plan and make a tabard-style Stone Age tunic for a teddy of their own from home. Finally, children evaluate their final product against their plan and look at textile artists in the UK.
My class loved this unit, they worked with such focus and I was very proud! Threading the needles was a bit tricky so I allocated some of my more able needle-threaders to tables to help sort out problems. One child sewed her tunic to her jumper, so warn your class about that classic mistake!

Perfect for your Year 2 SATs preparation and the upcoming coronation! This 3-page reading comprehension gives your children a general introduction to King Charles III and the coronation. It’s an opportunity to practise retrieval, vocabulary and inference questions using the format and wording of Key Stage I SATs papers.
Frooby the Maths Dragon throws a tea party but will the fussy blue witch spoil his carefully prepared tea party?
Revise or introduce symmetry in a vertical line with your class using the Return of Frooby story powerpoint.
Follow-up the story with some Frooby-themed images for sorting, drawing or describing lines of symmetry.

A behaviour consultant once recommended I use social stories to tackle persistent behaviours in class. However, I found these hard to find relevant to my particular needs so I wrote some myself. The stories explain very specifically the behaviours being exhibited and the effects and feelings that these behaviours create. I wrote these stories for real children so please excuse the lack of ethnic diversity and gender bias, this happened to be my demographic at the time of writing! Contact me if you would like an updated version to suit your pupils.
I read the 'calling out' story to a bright boy who persistently called out in class and it was like a revelation to him. He hadn't considered how it affected other children. He said, "This boy is a bit like me, isn't he?" His calling out improved dramatically and when it inevitably slipped, we simply got the story out again and re-read it. Much better than repeated tellings off and squashing his spirit! I used the other two stories similarly and enjoyed the discussions I had with the children involved.
Three pages of differentiated, pirate-themed addition and subtraction word problems (one step only). When I use these, I cut them up or get the children to cut them up and stick them in individually, which allows space to show their working and avoids pages full of worksheets glued in.
Each page makes specific reference to the 2013 National Curriculum Key Stage 1 Mathematics programme of study (Year 2 expectations):
Pupils should be taught to add and subtract numbers using concrete objects, pictorial representations, and mentally, including:
- a two-digit number and ones
- a two-digit number and tens
- two two-digit numbers
Posters to promote growth mindsets in the classroom environment and a questionnaire to diagnose areas for development.

Based on the 2016 interim assessment framework for KS1 mathematics, this form provides additional evidencing of the Working Towards criteria for maths. Useful for children who struggle to record their knowledge.
Set up independent spelling practise of the Year 1 CEW with a selection of meaningful spelling activities to suit a range of learning styles. These could be used as morning jobs or small group work allowing you to work with a focus group whilst knowing that your independent groups are carrying out learning activities and not just ‘holding’ tasks.
The recording sheets contain the 45 common exception words contained in National Curriculum for Year 1. There are two designs with a few different headings to suit your classroom practise. I use one for recording which words they can read and then a second one for those they can spell. Children enjoy colouring in the sheet and working towards completing the whole sheet.

Year 1 writing frames/scaffolds for our first topic - 'Wish you were here...'
We will be using the 'Holidays - joining with and - writing scaffolds' to practise orally rehearsing sentences including words joined with 'and' before writing them. Moving on from using the scaffold we will be writing sentences about our holiday with more independence.
We'll be using the postcard templates as role-play writing materials but they could be used in a variety of ways including phonics application, early morning work or incorporated into a whole lesson. The postcards include three levels of differentiation.
Bookmark targets cards in a variety of colours and with a range of headings, including a blank space for you to write on your own if preferred. The target cards include a 'Personal Best' box for children/teacher to record their achievement and attempt to improve upon it. E.g. I can use full stops correctly. PB - 5 (full stops used correctly). I've found 'PB's to be very motivating in the past! They also give children a sense of ownership and involvement with their targets.
Three differentiated 'Seaside Snack Shack' menus for addition and subtraction work as well as one-step problem solving involving addition and subtraction, including missing number problems.
The three menus cover objectives as follows:
Menu 1 -
- use number bonds within 10.
Menu 2 -
- use number bonds within 20
- add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including 0.
Menu 3 -
- solve one-step problems that involve addition and subtraction, using concrete objects and pictorial representations, and missing number problems such as 7 = ? - 9.
Stories include: Little Red Riding Hood, The Gingerbread Man, The Frog Prince, The Three Little Pigs and Jack and the Beanstalk. Opportunities for pictorial or written responses - perfect for Year R and Year 1!
This resource contains two files:
1. Making connections - children are encouraged to relate their own experiences to five different traditional tales.
2. Retelling - children are given a framework and some simple story vocabulary for retelling five different traditional tales. There is also a character and a speech bubble from each story where children can write recurring character phrases.
