Bram Stoker’s masterpiece ‘Dracula’ continues to enjoy worldwide popularity in its many different forms and reboots. This gothic horror text shadows a tragic love story, exploring a number of key themes that remain significant to post-modern audiences. I have taught this text a number of times in the last twenty years and I have used this specific resource (revised in 2021) to lead my classroom teaching, as a distance learning material for SKYPE lessons, as a homework assignment and even as a tool of revision – all have worked well for the students. This dynamically illustrated PowerPoint lesson (26 slides, approximately 2 hours of teaching time) works as an introduction to the text, and focuses on three main areas of exploration: The Life and Works of Bram Stoker The Leading Themes and their Post-Modern Significance The Characterisation of Leading Protagonists and Antagonists within the Text This is a complete resource with no additional work required from the teacher. Enjoy!

Joseph Conrad’s ‘Heart of Darkness’ was of course adapted by Francis Ford Coppola into the iconic ‘Apocalypse Now’, often leaving this landmark text sometimes ignored. This chilling work (ahead of its time) questions the hollowness of civilisation and the truly barbaric nature of the British Empire’s campaign of colonialism. This framed novel contains three parts, split down into subsections for study. This power point lesson focuses on part 2, 1 of 3 (The potential hanging of a trader – the boat journey with the cannibals ) and contains a starter activity, a glossary of terms, summary and analysis questions, an academic writing task, an extension task, a homework assignment and a plenary. All slides are beautifully illustrated and very engaging for the students. I have taught this text for the last five years and I have used this resource to lead my teaching in class, as a distance learning material and as a tool of revision. This is a complete resource that has completed all of the difficult work for teachers. Enjoy!

Toni Morrison’s ‘Beloved’ remains an essential text to support our understanding of the post-modern dilemmas of racial inequality. I have taught this novel a number of times and have refined this resource at the close of every academic year. It works! I have successfully used this resource to lead my teaching in the classroom, as a homework and distance learning material and even as a tool of revision – all have worked well for the students. This beautifully illustrated forty-two (yes, 42) slide PowerPoint lesson contains a step by step guide on writing an A level essay response. Beloved portrays the life of a household before and after slavery. How does the author present the influence of the enslaved institution and its continued influence on subsequent generations? It is particularly suitable for unconfident students, or students that work at a slower pace than their peers. I have received exceptional feedback from the students regarding this specific resource and the English department as a whole. There is no work for you to complete whatsoever. This is a complete resource. Enjoy.
